By agreement with Kelemvor, the god of the dead, they cannot harm or trick the waiting souls Within the Fugue Plane lurk small enclaves of baatezu. "When mortals die, their souls are drawn to the Fugue Plane. From time to time (anywhere from once a day to over a tenday), the powers send representatives to the Fugue Plane to gather the souls of their own worshipers.Ī worshipers soul automatically recognizes an agent of its own deity, knows that it needs to go to that agent, and cannot be deceived by any means into following the agent of another divine power. TL DR, but I wanted to give as much context as possible. Soul larvae are unique in that they are the only type of petitioner that become unthinking slugs instead of retaining their mental faculties (other than memory), though an extremely small number of them can retain their memories just like other petitioners. And when I say won over, I mean devils actually go to the Fugue Plane to try to corrupt mortal souls into willingly coming with them.Įven if they didn't transform like this (souls going to other realms generally keep the form they had in life), souls lose who they were in life once they become petitioners, so even if they didn't turn into mindless larvae, they'd still just become blank entities without any of their past lives surviving.ĮDIT: Though souls CAN end up there in other ways, and retain their memories and who they used to be, but if your afterlife is Hell (for whatever reason), the first thing that happens to you when you enter the afterlife you become a petitioner, and when you become a petitioner you lose most (usually all) of your memories (except for extremely rare cases). Nope, souls that end up in the lower planes (or won over with bargains in the case of devils) turn into soul larvae - mindless, evil worms. This also opens up some possibilities of good souls in hell, which should be fun. The servitors of deities are ALWAYS waiting for souls, since they're constantly coming in. In this case your deity must send an escort so your are not easy picking then. So no matter your alignment, as long as you pay homage to a powerful entity you can expect to find some reward after death. My understanding is that this is where the bulk of the souls in the Hells come from, or through bartering in the Hells.īecause devil worshippers aren't actually Faithful (Asmodeus is probably the exception now?) since devils aren't true deities, they can expect to end up in their devil's realm but I think are granted higher status (e.g. Devils steal souls from the Wall, from deific realms (difficult), from other planes, etc. These can come from any number of sources, like if a mortal makes a deal with a devil (or reneges on one), or more likely from the many raids perpetrated by devils. The Nine Hells are where you don't want to end up, and are populated by damned souls. The Faithless are interred in the Wall and eventually absorbed. Their first stop is the Fugue Plain, where they're escorted by servitors of their god to their destined afterlife, thus why they do good/evil deeds in life.
